Cro Cop, the former Pride star who recently agreed to return to the UFC and fight Junior dos Santos at UFC 103, said in an interview with Index.hr (a web site in his native Croatia) that he thinks Lesnar's victory is a bad thing for mixed martial arts. Here's how Fighters Only translates Cro Cop's comments:
"I must point out that his victory is a defeat for the sport as such. Don't get me wrong, Lesnar is a fearsome and very dangerous opponent, but I am old school, I prefer skill and technique. This win was a defeat of martial skills. Much of what he achieved in the fight is a result of pure power... Of course, Lesnar has quality sparring partners, is an experienced wrestler and a man who learns very quickly. But he is yet to have a real struggle. He does not have many fights in his career and I would love to see how he would react to two or three good low kicks."
Mirko Cro Cop has jumped into the Lesnar Hate Group of the UFC. Now that Cro Cop has returned to action in the UFC it seems he feels that Lesnar's win at UFC 100 was a setback for Mixed Martial Arts not a gain. His account is that though Lesnar is a dominant wrestler and powerful fighter he showed no mixed martial art abilities and that he really hasn't gone long enough to be tested. Cro Cop states that he would like to see him after a few low leg kicks.
I agree it will be nice to see Lesnar go a few rounds and see his durability. As far as the leg kicks are concerned, if your foot does not snap off at the base after kicking the mountain Lesnar it would be interesting to see how he deals with that sort of variety. Though, we adamantly despise Lesnar, he does a great job of not allowing his opponents to get into that kind of rythym to produce leg kicks and other mixed martial art habits. Between the Goldberg like tackles and the brute strength to hold his opponents down when do you get the leg kicks in. Mir tried to get some knees and kicks in but Lesnar's power over ruled them and he ended on his back eating thousands of punches.
Cro Cop has a point but really does anyone have that kind of power and quickness to stay out from underneath Lesnar....the world is yet to see.
